An open field looked so welcoming that Shamrock couldn't keep himself from cantering forward out of the trees into the openness. The breeze caught his mane and tail, short with his youth and tossing them about. Splattered white and bay, Sham was a fine young colt, slightly tall and beginning to grow into the appearance of a mature colt beginning his second year of life. Chocolate brown optics both warm and bright gazed at the open expanse of ground as he stood in the field taking in the last of the sun's rays. The sun was beginning to set and Shamrock for once didn't feel uneasy about wolves being on the prowl around him, waiting to snap him up for dinner.
Nope, here he felt safe just like Stetson had promised. Even if he was bold in his own right, Sham was tired of endless nights alone wondering if hew as about to be someone else's meal. Now he was safely within the boundaries of a herdland, even if he wasn't an official member of the herd. It was still a massive improvement from his past few months of constantly looking over his shoulder and worrying about the weather, cougars and wolves. Now as he pranced in place, impatiently waiting for his silver roan companion, Stetson, Sham felt lighthearted and hopeful.
A lot of herds didn't like taking in orphaned foals, even if Shamrock explained his parents were still alive. He was just lost and making the best of it. Still, he'd been turned down at least three times by small herds with lands much less impressive then this one. Besides, it wasn't like he was blind or sickly. Nope, Shamrock was healthy and whole, a powerful yearling quarter horse growing into the strong standards of his breed. He had a kind face, keen eyes and a friendly personality. The brown shamrock on his hip the cause for his name but he liked to think it also brought him luck. After all he hadn't been eaten yet right?
Tossing his head and snorting, Shamrock turned his head and looked for Stetson, hoping his friend would know where to go to find the lead stallion or at least find Stet's parents and twin. He didn't like the fact that his friend was alone even if it had been at the Lackadaisy Brook but it wasn't because of his gimpy leg. Nope, Sham just knew how dangerous it was being alone and even as he thought of it and stood in the herdlands he felt the familiar unease and constant sense of not being safe creeping back. It was something that was part of him now and though he was happy to be here, he knew he'd always be a little weary to say the least.

(OOC: Sorry for the long wait…and then I give you an ucky reply I haven’t felt myself lately.) BIC:
Stetson tries to move as quietly as he can as he sneaks up behind Shamrock, his tongue sticking out of the side of his mouth in concentration and chewing on it to try to keep back the giggles that threaten to give away his prank. It’s so good to see his friend here that he just can’t help but to play the little game. As soon as he feels he has gotten close enough he bounces forward to tap the painted colt on the haunch, “Boo!” With a shriek and a giggle, he hops around his friends side with a big grin across his face. “Looking for me?” he says with a mischievous twinkle in his eyes.
Around them is the burble of the river not far off and beyond that the faint hearings of a waterfall’s roar. Everyone must be down the hill and in the forest, eating their dinner on the grass by the lakeside or taking to making their beds in the forest. For nobody seems to be around on the upper end of the kingdom. Though he would have suspected his family to be waiting for him, he doesn’t seem them in sight. It doesn’t bother him though and he nudges Sham in a brotherly manner. “I didn’t scare you too much, did I, Sham?” ~Stetson

The pinto quarter horse let out a loud snort of surprise as his silver roan companion appeared from behind him. Whirling around the yearling swished his tail and flung his head high, wound up in his own gathering unease and then suddenly finding Stetson there was almost enough to give the colt a heart attack. Bobbing his head and pawing the ground, Shamrock eyed his friend with mild amusement and mock anger but unable to keep a hold on the anger. Instead he tossed his head again and snorted. He really needed to relax or he'd put himself in an early grave. Stomping his hind hoof, Sham bumped his muzzle against Stetson's neck and laughed, the sound echoing around them in the growing nighttime gloom.
"Of course you did, you're as scary as a cougar Stet" Shamrock nickered brightly. "I was just hoping you hadn't become a cougar's dinner is all."
Flicking his ears to and fro, Sham lowered his head for a moment and nibbled on the grass. It was dry from the daytime heat but tasted well enough on his empty belly. Since he was still a colt, Sham needed all the food he could get, right? He hoped not to be a stilt-legged colt forever in any case. Raising his head again, Shamrock grinned at his friend and pranced on the spot.
"So this is your home? It's really pretty." Shamrock looked around at the open meadows, listening to the thunder of a large waterfall not far away. Overhead he could see a few early stars starting to come out, a band of pink still hugging the western horizon as the sun continued to vanish and night darkened. Swishing his tail happily, the pinto yearling swung his head toward where he heard the waterfall, ears swerving forward to listen intently to the sound. "It sounds almost like the ocean" Sham told Stet. "A lot quieter though."

”That’s only cause we’re not close enough. It’s actually really loud!” He emphasizes with gusto, very enthused about his beautiful home and feeling a sense of pride for Shamrock’s compliment. “You wanna see it?” So excited, he doesn’t wait for an answer but turns to make a straight line towards the falls in his shuffling gait, looking back to whinny a call back to his friend and then to continue forward towards the area of interest.
They get there and the fading light is reflecting off the silver ribbons cascading down the drop to the lake below, which is already reflecting the stars dotting the sky. The mist dampens their coats and Stetson folds his ears back to protect them from the wet getting in them as he leans closer to look at the long way down. Normally he wouldn’t get so close, but his fear of water had seemed to abate enough for him to take a chance at exploring. “So pretty,” he muses. His dad had told him that there are rainbows all over in the daytime. Maybe he’ll have to look around in the morning too. ~Stetson
