Ebony waded into the lake and looked down at her hooves. She could see her own dark daggers through the shallow muddy waters. But no diamonds. She swore and bent toward the water. Why did it have to be diamonds, Komi? A ripple came in from somewhere in the center of the lake and splashed up on Ebony's nose. The black snorted in irritation and shook away the droplets. Now, for the diamond.
But unfortunately, the lake bed was filled with lots of shiny rocks that looked a damned lot like diamonds. By the time she was finished Ebony's face was thoroughly soaked; what with bobbing for shiny bits that looked a sight like diamonds when underwater, but were clearly quartz in clear air.
Ebony was just about to throw away yet another rock when something stopped her. She laid the rock back down on the shore and took another good look at it. Then a slow smile spread across her face.
Well, whaddya know?
There was her diamond at last.
